In 2001, Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering and College of Sciences and Mathematics jointly created a local BEST hub, Alabama BEST, as an effort to “grow” future engineers, scientists, and technical professionals to meet the future needs of business and industry in the state. In 2003, Alabama BEST became South's BEST, a regional competition for hubs east of the Mississippi River. It grew from those first 36 teams to 50 teams from 11 hubs in 2008.
South's BEST is one of the major goals of the teams in local hubs. To reach this point, teams must show outstanding engineering and marketing abilities. They must also put a majority of their time and effort into the project to succeed.
This year, more than 50 teams from eleven hubs will participate in the South's BEST competition. The newest hub is North Alabama BEST, based in Hanceville, Alabama. The Executive Director is Dr. George Blanks, and the Director of Outreach is Mary Lou Ewald. Regional Game Day will occur on Saturday, November 20, 2010.
